After a major rehabilitation, the public can now rediscover one of the most spectacular lookouts in the National Capital Region
National Capital Region — The National Capital Commission (NCC) is delighted to announce the reopening of Kìwekì Point, one of the Capital’s most iconic lookouts.
The winning 2017 “Big River Landscape” concept plan, developed by Janet Rosenberg & Studio, guided the redevelopment of Kìwekì Point. The NCC also highlights the contribution of Patkau Architects. Bringing this vision to life was a collaborative effort between the NCC and the Algonquin nation.
The reimagined site now offers two levels of unobstructed views of the Ottawa-Gatineau skyline and the Ottawa River, as well as a park with seating and pathways. Key features include an architectural shelter named “Whispering Point” and a footbridge, “Pìdàban Passage,” that re-establishes the historical connection of the site to Major’s Hill Park.
Visitors can explore monuments and artwork, enjoy numerous accessible rest areas, and follow pathways leading to various discovery points. Interpretive text panels provide insights on the river’s evolution and its impacts. Sustainable landscape features have been thoughtfully integrated into Kìwekì Point and the park to prevent erosion, manage drainage, and handle stormwater effectively.
Visitors also have the opportunity to explore the Ottawa River landscape and engage with diverse perspectives, including those of the Algonquin nation. These insights enrich and guide the experience throughout the park.
KEY FACTS
- The $45 million rehabilitation was in part funded by the $228.6 million in federal funding the NCC received between 2018 and 2023 for critical repairs of high-impact and high-value assets.
- In line with the “Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action,”, the Kìwekì Point redevelopment interpretation plan, highlights Algonquin voices and showcases Algonquin culture and language: Kìwekì Point means “returning to one’s homeland” and the footbridge “Pìdàban Passage”, means “dawn”.
- The installation of “Pìdàban Passage,” the footbridge connecting Major’s Hill Park and Kìwekì Point, was completed in five days in September 2023.
QUOTE
“Today, we celebrate the remarkable transformation of Kìwekì Point, and the renewal of its connection to the Ottawa River, a waterway of great cultural, historical and ecological significance. Congratulations to the National Capital Commission, the Algonquin Nation, and all the partners who have been visionary in creating a unique and timeless place in the heart of our capital.”
— The Honourable Joël Lightbound, Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement and minister responsible for the National Capital Commission
“Kìwekì Point is a breathtaking space where history, culture, and nature come together in the heart of the National Capital Region. Overlooking the Ottawa River, this site stands above a historic travel and trade route—used for millennia by the Algonquin People and later by early explorers like Samuel de Champlain. Long a place of meeting, exchange, and reflection, it continues to carry that spirit today. Its revitalization, shaped by Algonquin voices and traditions, honours the deep roots of this land while offering all Canadians a space to reconnect—with the land, with each other, and with the stories that define us.”
— The Honourable Mona Fortier, Member of Parliament for Ottawa–Vanier–Gloucester
“Kìwekì Point stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts and shared vision of all involved, offering a unique and enriching experience for all visitors. The NCC invites you to explore and enjoy this beautifully reimagined space.”
— Tobi Nussbaum, Chief Executive Officer, National Capital Commission
