Beverly A. Sandalack

Beverly A. Sandalack is a professor at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape of the University of Calgary, where she teaches urban design, landscape architecture and planning. She formerly taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and at Olds College. Before returning to Calgary in 1999, she practised landscape architecture and planning with private sector firms in Calgary and Winnipeg, and continues to practice with her firm, Sandalack + Alaniz Urban Design, Landscape Architecture + Planning. She is a registered landscape architect and registered planner. She is a fellow of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, was recipient of the CSLA Teaching Award in 2018, and served as President of the AALA. Beverly chaired the International Federation of Landscape Architects Student Design Competition Jury from 2004 to 2020 and received the IFLA President’s Award in 2020. She has just completed her third term as member of the Calgary Urban Design Review Panel and has served on or chaired several design review juries in Canada and internationally. She was Associate Dean (Academic) in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, University of Calgary from 2012 to 2019, founding director of the Master of Landscape Architecture Program from 2015 to 2019, Head of the Master of Planning Program from 2012 to 2019, and Director of the Ph.D. program from 2012 to 2014. Since 2000, she has co-directed the Urban Lab, an innovative and award-winning research group concerned with urban design, urban morphology and cultural landscapes and whose work has received 10 CSLA awards, including four National Honour Awards, plus an EDRA Place Planning Award, a Calgary Heritage Lion Award, and an APPI Planning Award. Her publications include two books on urban morphology and design: The Calgary Project: Urban Form / Urban Life (2006, currently being updated) and Urban Structure – Halifax: An Urban Design Approach (1998); two books on sense of place and cultural landscapes; and numerous articles in academic journals and the local press. She completed a Master of Landscape Architecture degree at the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in Urban Design at Oxford Brookes University in the UK.
