Alexandra Bridge Replacement Project

Alexandra Bridge Replacement

The NCC Board of Directors approved the final schematic design for the Alexandra Bridge Replacement Project. The goal of the schematic design is to establish the overall vision before moving into more detailed design development and construction.

About this project

Originally built over 120 years ago for trains, horses and wagons, electric streetcars, and pedestrians, the Alexandra Bridge has reached the end of its lifecycle and is due for replacement.

The Government of Canada has directed that it be replaced to make sure the crossing can service transportation needs well into the future. Ongoing repairs will allow it to remain in use until the start of construction in 2028.

About the new bridge design

Gathering points are marked by the sections of the bridge where the structure curves below the deck. These are supported below by a structural form that reaches out in a sculpted support.

Next steps

This federal land use and design approval allows the project team and their design-build partner to continue refining the design for the bridge and the temporary marine infrastructure needed to proceed with construction.

About the design

The proposed design features a parking garage with 2,863 parking spaces, including 80 accessible spaces and 163 spaces for people with limited mobility. The park will feature tennis courts, lawns, play areas, viewpoints, seating, trees and gardens.

Next steps

The Ottawa Hospital’s New Campus Development is being designed and built in phases. The campus design will be developed further before the next and final approval recommendation.
